Braunschweig / 14.10.2016
More than 310 participants from 34 countries met at the trade meeting for the wood-based materials and supplier industry and made the conference a complete success.
From 5th to 7th October 2016, Hamburg revolved around the topic of wood. To mark the occasion of the 10th anniversary, the European Wood-based Panel Symposium took place in the Hanseatic city for the first time. In 22 presentations, the speakers presented the entire spectrum of new developments and market trends. This year, in addition to the general number of participants, the number of participants from the wood-based materials and furniture industries showed a significant increase in particular. With more than 90 people, this figure is nearly equivalent to the number of participants from the supplier industry.
Michael Wolff, President and CEO of the Pfleiderer Group, Wroclaw/Breslau (Poland), who presented current market figures for the EPF, emphasized in his opening speech that the wood-based materials sector is currently developing well through almost the whole of Europe. In most European countries, benefits can be gained from the very good building economy. It is expected that the demand for wood-based materials in Europe will reach more than 45 million m3 by 2019 at the latest; this would, for the first time, exceed the demand levels from before the industry crisis in 2008.
The spectrum of topics for the other 21 presentations over the six sessions ranged from machining technologies such as chipping and pulping, through alternative and bio-based adhesives, the subsequent deformation of wood-based materials, measurement and testing procedures to VOC emissions and recycling.
The evening reception, traditionally organized by Sasol Wax, led guests this year to the Port of Hamburg. In the cargo hatchway of the former freight ship and now museum ship Cap San Diego, the shanty choir "Windrose" greeted the Symposium participants in befitting style with maritime songs. Later in the evening, the cover band "Second Take" rocked the venue, enabling many of the visitors to take the opportunity to get up and shake a leg.
The European Wood-based Panel Symposium takes place every two years and is organized by the Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research WKI and the European Panel Federation EPF with support from the International Association for Technical Issues related to Wood iVTH e.V. and Sasol Wax. Around 54 percent of the participants came from Germany, 35 percent from other European countries and 11 percent from overseas. The Symposium is primarily aimed at manufacturers of wood-based materials, the supplier industry and research institutions. The presentations given at the event can be ordered on CD from Ms. Heike Pichlmeier at the Fraunhofer WKI via the E-Mail address email@example.com. The price for the CD is 50 euros.
